Treatment of pseudofolliculitis barbae**
**Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB) – PFB, or razor bumps, is a common condition in which the regrowing hair, after shaving, curves back towards and pierces the skin resulting in a pustule or papule. PFB is very prevalent in populations with curly hair, affecting nearly 85% of men of African decent and a growing number of women. The LightSheer’s excellent safety profile for all skin types including the darkest skin, makes it a safe, effective and revolutionary alternative for the treatment of pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Q: How does the LightSheer Diode Laser System work?

A: The system emits near-infrared laser light that is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed, or turned on, for only a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to damage the follicle, while the systems’ unique, patented contact-cooling hand piece, the ChillTip, helps protect the skin by conductive cooling during the laser energy delivery.

Q: Are the Results Permanent?

A: The LightSheer laser has been cleared by the FDA for hair removal and permanent hair reduction on all skin types and tanned skin.  To achieve a satisfactory level of clearance, 3-5  treatments are typically required. Darker skin might require more treatments.

Q: Is the procedure uncomfortable?

A: Thanks to the ChillTip, discomfort is typically minimal. Most people compare the pulses to tiny ‘elastic bands snapping against the skin”. Some patients elect to use a prescription numbing agent, but many people tolerate the procedure without it. If you decide to use a numbing agent, our office can help you select and procure the appropriate product.

Q: What will my skin look like afterwards?

It will have less hair! The procedure is quick and non-invasive, so there is virtually no downtime. Some redness, swelling and/or mild scabbing might occur. We apply cold therapy to the area and will advise you as to the appropriate home care for your skin type. In general, a little TLC and common sense for a couple of days is all that’s needed, (avoid sunbathing, steam rooms, etc).
